This Garden is located in front of the Belém Palace, now used as a presidential residence. About nine acres in extent, it is dedicated to the man who established the Portuguese colonial empire in the Indian Ocean, Afonso de Albuquerque (1453-1515). Central to the park is the beautiful neo-Manueline style monument which carries a 4 metre tall bronze statue of Afonso and has interesting reliefs about his life. This is the work of the sculptor Costa Mota on a base by the architect Silva Pinto, it was inaugurated in 1902. The four fountains in the square are by Barata Feyo.
