Instructed by the Marquês de Pombal in 1768, Domingos Vanelli designed the 10 acre, two level Ajuda Botanical Garden, the first in Portugal. Restored during 1994-1997 and managed by the Higher Institute for Agronomics, the garden contains species from all over the world. Many are from former Portuguese colonies and there are some centuries-old trees, including a 400 year old dragon tree. One of the outstanding features is the restored 18th century Baroque 40 spout fountain, decorated with serpents, fish, sea horses, and mythical creatures. There are fine views of the Tagus River and the 25th April Bridge.
