Built in the 19th century as a residence for the Portuguese kings, the palace was never completed as originally intended and, in fact, the west wing is still unfinished. Initially this was due to the invasion by Napoleon which led to the royal family fleeing to Brazil. In spite of this, it remains one of Europe’s most elegant buildings with its richly furnished and decorated interior. The huge throne room and dining room are particularly impressive, as is the ceiling in the Winter Garden, a gift from the Viceroy of Egypt.
