Albufeira is a town devoted to tourism and leisure, but the Cerro da Vila still has the picturesque appeal of whitewashed houses and mediaeval streets. In Travessa da Igreja Velha is an old Moorish arch showing where a mosque once stood. This later became the town’s first church. On the beach fishermen carry on the task of mending and preparing the nets, as they have done for hundreds of years. A walk by the sea provides magnificent views of the city. The promenade leads to the cave at Xorino, where the Moors took refuge from the Christians in the 13th century.
