Almeida Garrett (1799-1854), the great Portuguese romantic poet, novelist and liberal politician, was born in the house at 37, Rua Dr Barbosa de Castro on February 4th 1799. It is a typical 18th century property and, like other houses in the area, pays tribute to the urban upgrading of Porto by the Almada family. Almeida Garrett only lived here for five years before his parents moved to Gaia. The imposing wall plaque in the middle of the first floor has laurel-type decoration and was put up in homage by the city council in 1864.
