Almeida Garrett (1799-1854) the Portuguese romantic poet, novelist, dramatist and liberal politician was a citizen of Porto and is buried in the national pantheon near to Alexandre Herculano and Luís Vaz de Camões. He is honoured by a 1954 bronze monument on a granite base in front of the City Hall, the work of sculptor Salvador Carvão da Silva d’Eça Barata Feyo. Almeida Garrett is depicted in a frock coat with a cape falling down in pleats. His head is in three quarter profile, with the left arm resting on his chest and right arm on his leg holding gloves.
