The Amoreiras Garden is also known as, and named after, the dramatist, poet and writer Marcelino Mesquita (1856-1919). It was inaugurated with 331 mulberry trees (amoreiras) by the Marquis of Pombal in 1759, to encourage the Portuguese silk industry. The Royal Silk Factory, which stood near the square, has now been restored to house the Arpad Szénes-Vieira da Silva Museum (see separate entry). In the garden you can see 10 different tree species including fine mulberry specimens, a group of ginkos (maidenhair) trees and a sycamore maple. There is a children’s playground, fountain and a small pond.
