The Amoreiras Towers Shopping Centre was the first large complex of its kind in Portugal and it still remains popular although others have since been built. Inaugurated in 1985, it was designed by the architect Tomás Taveira with daring lines for the time and pink and blue towers; it won the Valmor Prize for architecture in 1993. It gets its name, which translates as ‘mulberry trees’, from the trees planted in the city by the Marquês de Pombal in the 18th century. The centre houses about 370 shops, 10 cinemas and many restaurants.
