Dr. Anastacio Gonçalves (1889-1965), a war veteran, friend of Calouste Gulbenkian and a fellow art lover, was also a renowned ophthalmologist. Housed in an architectural prize winning art nouveau building built in 1904, his fabulous collection of more than 2000 items is an attraction not to be missed. The collection is broadly divided into three sections, 19th and 20th century paintings, Chinese porcelain and Portuguese and foreign furniture. João Vaz’s ethereal painting, A Praia (The Beach, 1890), dominates the studio.
