When visiting the Jerónimos Monastery it is virtually obligatory to visit the adjacent Antiga Confeitaria de Belém and sample its famous pastéis de nata (custard tarts). The Pasteis de Belém has been in operation since 1837 and the recipe for its custard tarts is jealously guarded and said to be known to only three bakers at any time. An average of about 10,000 per day is sold, although the record is 55,000. You can eat them inside, in a room decorated with 17th century tiles, or take them away in the café’s specially made paper tube. Coffee is also good.
