Linking the south of Portugal to Lisbon across the Tagus River, this suspension bridge was inaugurated on 6 August 1966. Originally named for Prime Minister Salazar, it was renamed after the 1974 revolution. It was built by the American firm responsible for the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, with which it is often compared. A spectacular sight, its overall length is 2,278 metres and its clear span is one of the largest in Europe. Several films have featured this bridge including the James Bond movie “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”.
