The Arrábida Bridge, at 272 metres, had the largest span of any concrete arch bridge in the world. One of Porto’s six bridges, it connects Porto with Vila Nova de Gaia across the Douro River and lies downriver from the city centre just beyond the tram museum in the direction of Foz. Designed by Professor Edgar António de Mesquita Cardoso (1913-2000), work commenced in 1957 and the bridge was opened in 1963. The arch is 52metres high.
