Running from the Praça dos Restauradores to Praça Marquês de Pombal, the Avenida da Liberdade is 1.5 kms long and 90 m wide and developed with the Champs Elysées in mind. The present boulevard replaced the earlier Passeio Público created by Pombal after the 1755 earthquake and was built between 1879 and 1882. Although modern buildings have replaced many of the 19th century mansions, it still has elegance with its fountains, statues and open air cafes under the trees. Features are the World War I monument, the old Tivoli cinema, with its original kiosk, and the Casa Lambertini at No 166.
