Completed in 1992 as the headquarters of the Portuguese Presidency of the European Community, the Belém Cultural Centre is the country’s largest facility of this type. Designed jointly by the Italian architects Vittorio Gregotti (Italian) and Manuel Salgado (Portuguese), the interior was planned by Daciano Costa. It has 70,000 square metres of exhibition area and houses the Berardo Museum of Modern Art (see separate entry). There are facilities for music, the performing arts, photography and conferences; the café and restaurant are also very popular. The centre won the International Stone Architecture Award at the Verona Fair in 1993.
