A symbol of the Portuguese Age of Discovery, the tower was completed in the early 16th century and commemorates Vasco de Gama’s expedition. Built in the Portuguese late Gothic style as a watchtower to guard Lisbon’s harbour, it was designated a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1983. Four storeys (35 metres) high it offers superb views across the river Tagus. Regarded as one of the finest examples of Manueline architecture, the decorative detail facing the river is particularly noteworthy. The architect was Francisco de Arruda. This is one of Portugal’s top tourist attractions and should not be missed.
