Opening in June 2007, the Berardo Museum of Modern Art contains one of the world’s most important collections of modern and contemporary art. José Berardo, one Portugal’s wealthiest businessmen, decided that he wanted to find a museum to house his collection of an estimated 4,000 art works. He eventually reached agreement with the Portuguese government, which ensured the collection remained in Portugal. The museum is housed in Lisbon’s Belém Cultural Centre, with the rest of the Berarado art collection on display in various museums throughout the country.
