Homage is paid to the Portuguese poet Luís Vaz de Camões (1524-1580) with this statue in bronze by Victor Bastos. The monument is 11.5 metres tall and was completed in 1867; the statue weighs 9,700 kgs. Camões is portrayed with a crown of laurels, left hand on sword, clutching to his chest a copy of his epic poem ‘Os Lusíadas’. The base has the Portuguese coat of arms and eight statues of other prominent Portuguese, Fernão Lopes, Gomes Eanes de Azurara, Jerónimo Corte Real, Francisco de Sá Meneses, Vasco de Quevedo, Fernão Lopes de Castanheda, João de Barros and Pedro Nunes.
