The Camões Theatre in the Parque das Nações was designed by Portuguese architect Manuel Salgado for Expo ‘98. Facing two imposing adjacent buildings, the Oceanarium and the Pavilion of Knowledge, the architect opted for simplicity. The main entrance is through a glazed atrium overlooking the River Tagus which is known in this area as the Straw Sea (Mar da Palha). The theatre is the home of the Portuguese National Ballet (Companhia Nacional de Bailado) and stages musicals and ballet. The auditorium has a 1,000 audience capacity and is named after one of Portugal’s greatest poets Luís Vaz de Camões (1524-1580).
