The area which is now the Campo Grande Garden was originally the Campo de Alvalade common and in the 19th century staged horse racing. Today a popular leisure and recreational area, it was redesigned by the architect Keil do Amaral in 1945. Facilities include a picnic area, children’s playground, two tennis courts, two lakes (one with rowing boats for hire), a skating rink, a swimming pool with inflatable cover and the Caleidoscópio shopping centre. There are statues of Kings Afonso Henriques and João I at the north end and Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro, the humorist and caricaturist at the south end.
