Built as part of a convent and first occupied in 1622, the Igreja das Carmelitas stands next to the later Igreja do Carmo. The church was subject to considerable modification around 1730 and a new main chapel was added. The façade is classical with a single bell tower and niches occupied by statues of Nossa Senhora do Carmo, São José and Santa Teresa de Jesus. During the French Invasion (1808-1814) the convent was used as a barracks and was also used for the same purpose after the Banning of Religious Orders in 1834. The church has a richly gilded interior.
