Also known as the Santa Justa lift, this iron structure, built in neo-gothic style, was opened on the 31st of August 1901. A most novel form of transport, it links downtown Lisbon with Carmo Square and is 45 metres high. Designed by the Oporto born Raul Mesnier de Ponsard, it consists of two cabins with wooden interiors, each taking 24 passengers. A fine example of its architectural style, it has often been wrongly attributed to the famous French structural engineer Gustave Eiffel. It was classified as a national monument in 2002.
