The Clerigos Church predates the famous tower, being started in 1732 and completed around 1750. As with the tower, the church was the work of the Italian-born Nicolau Nasoni. The monumental divided stairway in front of the church was completed in the 1750s. A fine example of Italianate Baroque architecture, the façade is extensively decorated with typically ornate motifs and it was one of the first Portuguese churches to adopt a characteristic baroque elliptic floor plan. Note the altarpiece of the main chapel, in polychromed marble, designed by Manuel dos Santos Porto.
