The pleasant Cordoaria Garden, near Porto University and Clerigos Church and Tower, is also known as João Chagas Garden, or simply Cordoaria to the locals. It was originally established in 1865, by the German landscape gardener Emilio David. In 1941 the garden was devastated by a cyclone and lost most of its trees. It was considerably upgraded when Porto became a European Capital of Culture in 2001. The sculptures in the garden are an attraction; these include A Flora, a statue of Ramalho Ortigão, a bust of António Nobre (see separate entries) and a series of sculptures by Juan Muñoz (2001).
