One of the landmarks of Porto, this iron bridge was designed by Teófilo Seyrig, a pupil of Gustave Eiffel. Construction commenced in 1881 and the bridge was opened in 1886. It spans 172 metres across the River Douro, from north to south, in a single arch and has two traffic levels. The upper road, which is open to pedestrians, provides magnificent views of the city and the river. Adjacent to the bridge are pillars, which are all that remains of the Ponte Pensil suspension bridge which was in use between 1843 and 1887.
