Inaugurated in 1866, the statue of the much loved King Pedro V (1853-1861), the work of sculptor Teixeira Lopes (senior), is located in the Praça da Batalha. The king did much to modernise Portugal and died tragically of cholera in an epidemic. The octagonal pedestal has inscribed bas-reliefs on four faces with the symbols of, religion, the arts, agriculture, and industry (clockwise from the north). The base is octagonal with four steps and railings and over the steps are medallions inscribed with the names of the main contributors. The coats of arms are those of Portugal, Porto, and Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.
