Built by the British consul John Whitehead between 1790 and 1795, the Feitoria Inglesa is regarded as one of the most attractive and imposing buildings in Porto. Its style is English neo-palladian, inspired by the work of the Italian architect Andrea Palladio (1508-1580). Its seven arches form an arcade which includes the entrance to the building. The main floor has railed balconies with pediments above the windows and the façade has a baluster decorated parapet. Inside, the building, which is now a private club and the headquarters of the Port Wine Shippers Association, has a renowned staircase, skylight, kitchen and ballroom.
